Considering the much-awaited and long-felt need for an institution imparting quality education at the higher level of study with an eye on the character building of the younger generation in the Barbhag area of Nalbari District, Barbhag College was established in the year 1964.The birth of this institution was the result of the toil and sacrifices of a few spirited and progressive individuals who worked day and night for years to turn this long cherished dream into reality. Since its inception, the institution has been striving hard to make the rural folk of Barbhag truly educated. The economically backward people of Barbhag area have immensely benefited from this centre of Higher education. It has been successful to a great extent in fulfilling the academic aspirations of the people. So far the students of the college have shown good academic results. The college has been striving, in recent years, to encourage research on diverse subjects. With a view to creating an academic and research environment, a number of conferences and seminars of national importance were successfully organised in the last decade. In keeping with the initiative of encouraging research, the college has also brought out a number of research publications. The college has taken, and further intends to take innovative steps towards improving quality of education in keeping with the fast changing trends in higher education. At present the college is recognised by UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act and affiliated to Gauhati University and AHSEC.


To build the monument of a society free from discrimination, prosperous with moral uprightness, cultured and self-reliant through spreading higher education among the economically backward people of the greater Barbhag region, and thereby creating a cosmopolitan attitude among them is the mission of Barbhag College.


While pursuing its cherished mission, Barbhag College sets for itself the following objectives for gradual but sustainable implementation.

  1. To Spread Higher Education among women in addition to the backward classes including SC/ST and OBC.
  2. To create a congenial atmosphere for popularizing career and job oriented programmes.
  3. To popularize and humanizes socio cultural programmes such as drama, music, workshop, dance competition, etc.
  4. To create awareness among women in particular and people in general regarding the necessity of adult education.
  5. To impart adequate training in different area useful to day-to-day life to the students with a view to making them self-reliant and self-sufficient.
  6. To provide equal opportunity to both boys and girls in imparting education.
  7. To build a scientific temper among the students in particular and the people in general by creating scientific awareness among them through undertaking various relevant programmes.
  8. To make constant efforts towards creating health and hygiene awareness.
  9. To include civic responsibilities among the students.
  10. To make efforts towards all – round personality development of the learners.
